Passion Play

This event has been suspended due to COVID-19 global pandemic.

Aspen Sister Cities is offering a Sister City trip to Oberammergau, Germany in the summer of 2020 to see the internationally renowned Oberammergau Passion Play.

Garmisch Germany Mountain Range

Oberammagau Passion Play History

This unique presentation was born in 1634 when the Black Plague invaded Europe and was ravaging the tiny mountain town of Oberammergau. Residents convened a prayer meeting, in which they pledged to God that they would forever tell the story of Christ’s passion should their town be spared.

From that point on, there were no more plague deaths in Oberammergau, and the play has been presented every 10 years ever since.

Dates

The Oberammergau Passion Play is presented from May until early October, 5 days a week, with shows beginning the afternoon and finishing in the evening after a 2 hour dinner break. All townspeople participate in the play … it is Oberammergau’s lifeblood. Two dates are being considered for this trip. Depending on interest, one or both of the trips will be offered: @ June 20 – 30, and @ October 3 – 13.

Location

Oberammergau is located a mere few miles from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Aspen’s first Sister City. In addition to seeing the Passion Play, this Sister City trip will offer opportunities to spend exciting days in Garmisch, to visit castles and museums, to tour quaint shops and villages, to hike majestic mountains and to ride the world’s most modern cable car (opened in 2017) to Germany’s highest peak, the Zugspitze.

Complete background and current information about the Passion Play can be found at the official website, or on Wikipedia.
